Fairfield is a township in far northwestern Essex County, New Jersey. The township is bisected by Interstate 80 and Route 46. A little over 7,000 people live in the 10.5 square miles the township covers.

Fairfield is centrally and conveniently located with easy access to major highways, public transportation, shopping, restaurants, Newark Airport, and more.

​As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 7,466, reflecting an increase of 403 (+5.7%) from the 7,063 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 552 (-7.2%) from the 7,615 counted in the 1990 Census. Fairfield is the least densely populated town in Essex County. 

The Fairfield School District is a highly rated community public school district that serves students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade from Fairfield Township, in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2011-12 school year, the district's two schools had an enrollment of 689 students and 53.2 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 12.95:1. 

In the year 2000, the district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as a District Factor Group "GH" the third-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J. 

 

Students in public school for seventh through twelfth grades attend the West Essex Regional School District, a regional school district in western Essex County serving students from Essex Fells, Fairfield, North Caldwell and Roseland. Schools in the district (with 2013-14 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics) are West Essex Regional Middle School (grades 7-8; 563 students) and West Essex High School (grades 9-12; 1,088 students).
